In an increasingly complex international context, the European Union is seeking to strengthen its relations with allies who share its values. According to France 24, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced in September during her State of the Union address that Canada could become the first partner to benefit from an associate membership status within the EU.

This associate membership status does not currently exist for partners of the European Union. It represents a new form of cooperation that the bloc wishes to develop to consolidate its strategic alliances. Canada, as a country aligned with European values, is an integral part of this envisioned framework.
