During FlyDubai flight 1073, the co-pilot attempted to kill the captain and destroyed the cockpit controls in an effort to crash the plane, reports France 24 on Thursday.
Despite sustaining multiple stab wounds, Captain Smit Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to subdue the suspect and regain control of the aircraft after a rapid descent of more than 14,000 feet in 30 seconds.
This intervention prevented a catastrophe similar to the September 11 attacks, stated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
