Kenya has launched the construction of a $16 billion mega oil refinery, a project described as a major step towards energy self-sufficiency in Africa, according to France 24.

Led by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, this facility is expected to produce up to 700,000 barrels per day and be completed within 30 months.

However, 133 members of a neighboring community have taken legal action, citing environmental risks as well as violations of their land rights and ancestral heritage.
