NASA announced on Friday the release of its final solicitation inviting the American industry to submit plans for the next generation of commercial space stations in low Earth orbit.

According to Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator, this initiative aligns with the United States’ national space policy aimed at maintaining a sustained American presence in low Earth orbit after the retirement of the International Space Station (ISS). These commercial stations will enable continued research, technology development, crew training, and preparation for lunar and Martian missions.

Since the beginning of the year, NASA has intensified consultations with industry, including requests for information and dedicated workshops, to define requirements and refine its approach. The agency seeks credible plans, strong technical capabilities, and companies willing to invest in space destinations that can serve NASA while developing commercial markets.

Proposals must be submitted by December 8, 2026, with contracts expected to be awarded in spring 2027. NASA plans to award multiple fixed-price contracts for the development, certification, and operation of these stations, with a phased selection process leading to final certification and service provision.
