Nearly 17,000 kilometers, over 19 hours in the air, and no stops between France and Australia. The test flight of a Qantas Airbus A350-1000ULR from Toulouse to Melbourne has provided a spectacular glimpse into the future of air travel. The aircraft, developed for Qantas, crossed the globe in one go, attracting tens of thousands of curious onlookers on flight tracking platforms.

This route was not yet a commercial service, nor even a rehearsal with ordinary passengers. It represented a certification step for the Project Sunrise program, Qantas’s ambitious plan to connect the east coast of Australia directly to London and New York. However, its arrival in Melbourne on July 24, 2026, made this project much more tangible: the aircraft capable of pushing the boundaries of long-haul travel is now in real-world testing.

A 19-Hour Journey That Captivated the World

The A350-1000ULR departed from Airbus’s industrial site in Toulouse on July 23 and landed in Melbourne the following morning, after approximately 19 hours and 15 minutes of flight. According to information published in Australia, four Airbus test pilots and five engineers were on board. The aircraft was carrying measurement equipment rather than a completed commercial cabin.

The feat was as much technical as it was media-driven. More than 67,000 people simultaneously tracked the flight on Flightradar24, making it the most observed flight of the day, reports The Guardian. In an industry often perceived as routine, this attention serves as a reminder that the promise of crossing the globe without layovers retains an almost romantic allure.

The Secret of the Airbus A350-1000ULR

The aircraft is based on the A350-1000, the largest model in Airbus’s long-haul family, but it has been adapted to meet Qantas’s extreme requirements. Its most significant difference lies in an additional central rear tank of approximately 20,000 liters. This reserve extends its range to nearly 18,000 kilometers and allows it to consider missions close to 22 hours.

However, fuel alone is not enough. Over such a distance, every kilogram counts. Qantas has therefore opted for a cabin with only 238 seats, whereas a standard A350-1000 can accommodate many more depending on its configuration. Fewer passengers mean less weight, but also a deliberate economic strategy: selling time savings at a premium that business travelers and premium customers are likely to value.

The announced cabin includes first-class suites, business seats that convert into beds, a premium class, an economy cabin, and a dedicated wellness area. This space will allow passengers to stretch, hydrate, and move during the longest hours of the journey. For Qantas, the challenge is therefore not only to fly the aircraft: it must also make a full day spent on board bearable.

London-Sydney: The Future Route That Could Break All Records

The heart of Project Sunrise is the future non-stop link between London and Sydney, approximately 17,015 kilometers long. Qantas plans to launch this service in October 2027, with ticket sales expected to be announced in February. The journey is expected to take between 19 and 22 hours depending on winds and operational conditions.

The airline claims that a direct flight could save up to four hours compared to an itinerary with a layover in Singapore or the Gulf. A Sydney-New York route is set to follow. If the timeline is adhered to, Qantas will then operate the longest regular commercial flights in the world, surpassing the current Singapore-New York route.

The name Sunrise refers to the multiple sunrises observed on these very long routes. It also extends an Australian story: in the 1940s, Qantas already used this term for flights that maintained a link with the UK during the war. The airline is now transforming this memory into a mark of global prestige.

An Industrial Victory for Toulouse and Airbus

The departure from Toulouse gives the test a strong French dimension. It is in the European capital of aeronautics that the aircraft was assembled and where Airbus is conducting its testing campaign. The A350-1000ULR serves as a showcase for European industrial expertise against Boeing, in a market where range, consumption, and comfort determine major orders.

For Airbus, the program proves that an existing platform can be pushed into a new segment without designing an entirely different aircraft. For Qantas, it offers a geographical advantage: Australia, long penalized by its remoteness, can turn its isolation into an exclusive product.

Comfort, Health, and Climate at the Heart of the Debate

The fascination does not erase the questions. Spending 20 hours or more in a cabin increases the importance of movement, sleep, hydration, and managing jet lag. Qantas has been working for several years with researchers to study the effects of these journeys on the body and to adapt schedules, meals, lighting, and physical activity.

The experience will vary significantly depending on the chosen class. A passenger with a closed bed will not experience the same journey as a traveler seated in economy for nearly a day. Price will also be decisive: the airline acknowledges that the absence of a layover will be sold at a premium.

The environmental question will follow every step of the program. A direct flight avoids an intermediate takeoff, but transporting a very large amount of fuel requires burning fuel to carry more. The aircraft’s low capacity also reduces the number of passengers over which emissions can be distributed. Therefore, commercial success will not be enough to close the debate on the carbon footprint per passenger.

Why This Flight Could Change the Map of Global Travel

For decades, major hubs in Singapore, Dubai, Doha, or Hong Kong have organized part of the flows between Europe and Australia. Ultra-long-haul connections will not eliminate this model, as layovers will remain less expensive and serve more cities. However, they can attract the most profitable traffic: business travelers, time-sensitive passengers, and high-end clientele.

The next revolution in the skies may not be faster: it will be more direct. By connecting two continents separated by nearly 17,000 kilometers, Airbus and Qantas have just sent a clear signal. The distance has not disappeared, but the layover could soon become optional.
