Google has withdrawn a new feature from Google Earth that allowed users to generate fictional elements directly within landscapes derived from satellite imagery based on a written instruction. The tool, powered by Nano Banana 2, was intended to invite users to “reimagine” geography. However, its proximity to a platform regarded as a visual reference immediately raised a concern: the potential circulation of false scenes presented as evidence of the real world.
According to TechCrunch, the feature was launched on Thursday, July 30, 2026, and then disabled the following day. Google explained that it had observed generated screenshots that appeared to violate its rules and announced a rollback while stronger safeguards were to be added. This swift reaction limits immediate damage. More importantly, it reveals a central tension: technology giants want to integrate generative AI everywhere, including in services whose value precisely relies on trust.
Google Earth and AI: What Triggered the Swift Withdrawal
The new feature allowed users to overlay creations from Nano Banana 2 onto geographical views. The principle could produce playful, artistic, or educational uses: imagining a park in a city, visualizing a fantastical setting, or testing an urban planning idea. It is this potential confusion that sparked criticism. These technologies are useful, but they do not solve everything: a screenshot, compression, or cropping can make the indicators less visible to the public.
The Real Danger: A Plausible Image at the Wrong Time
Effective misinformation does not need to deceive forever. Sometimes, it is enough for it to circulate for an hour, before a vote, during a crisis, or when a rumor goes viral. Even if later debunked, it can influence initial reactions, trigger local panic, or fuel a political narrative. Thus, the speed of creation and dissemination is as important as visual quality.
The withdrawal by Google shows that the safety of a tool cannot be assessed solely within its interface. It is also necessary to imagine what happens to its output once exported, separated from its warnings, and placed in another context.
