French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Monday that he has requested regional authorities to impose partial and localized curfews in certain cities affected by urban violence.

These measures aim to protect businesses after weekend protests escalated into riots, including town halls being set on fire and hundreds of shops looted.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had earlier acknowledged that the police had “lost control” of the demonstrations in several cities.

Sébastien Lecornu also accused the “ultra-left” far-left movement of seeking to “orchestrate deep unrest across the country” ahead of next year’s presidential election.

The Yellow Vests movement has called for another day of protests next Saturday, which could extend the period of social tensions.
