UN Environment Programme Foresees 1.7 to 1.8°C Warming Despite Paris Agreement

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that global warming will inevitably surpass the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement, with an expected rise between 1.7 and 1.8°C in the best case. The UN views this exceedance as temporary and advocates CO2 capture, including geoengineering, despite its risks and costs.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) confirmed on October 21 that global warming will inevitably exceed the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement. According to its annual report, even in the best-case scenarios, temperature increases are expected to reach between 1.7 and 1.8°C.

The UN describes this exceedance as “temporary” and emphasizes the need to deploy carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technologies to mitigate the effects of warming. Among the proposed solutions is geoengineering, a method the organization nevertheless considers “risky and costly.”

This assessment follows decades of actions deemed insufficient to contain warming, highlighting the major challenges the international community faces in meeting climate goals.
